There was a puppy in the room at my first appointment, that was certainly a good ice-breaker.

Hi! Whoever is reading this, I understand how rough things are right now. I just want to let you know that things will get better, I promise. Keep holding on just a little bit longer. I know you feel like nobody really cares. You're wrong, stop denying it. I care, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this. You're not alone, we may be miles away but we're all going through the same things. Please keep holding on❤️

I never know what to say in therapy. I just don't understand my own head

My first therapy appointments have been similar. They ask, "what brings you in today?" And the first time, I didn't know how to say a lot so they just asked who I lived with, if I was in school, do I have brothers and sisters, am I working, was I sleeping well...They also just went over things like confidentiality, how I could schedule future appointments and how long appointments lasted. It took the first 2-3 sessions for them to get my full story.

Once when about half of the session passed me and my therapist stayed silent for like 20 mins... It was the biggest mental torture I ever had. After my time has ended I just ran from her office..

"Your therapy at your pace" really struck me. I felt a big rushed the last few times I'd ever used therapy and it never occurred to me I should be in control of the pace. Thanks for the tip, much appreciated.
Also new hair style looks fantastic!

I first went to therapy on my fiftieth birthday, and I knew exactly what I wanted to talk about. My mother had died, and I had felt nothing about it—no emotion, nothing. It was just another day. She had not been a bad mom, but I had been a bad son. My best friend had been encouraging me to go for months, and I finally did and began a new stage of my journey. I can say that I am somewhat better now, but not so much that I don't need therapy. Because of an insurance change three years ago, I could no longer afford to go and was going to quit, but my therapist knew that I was not ready for that, so she insisted on seeing me pro bono after that. And so, I continue to see her without paying, but I always make sure to give back by sharing things that she has been able to use to help other patients. Cheers, Russ

It would be totally awesome if you just sat down and shared your thoughts on some things. Amazing video and as always, great advice

One of the best things my therapist did when I was still going to see her in university was not making the conversation one sided. It was so good feeling like I was just talking to someone in a conversation rather than just sitting there talking with minimal feedback (which was how I assumed it would be). Made me open up so much easier than if I felt like I was in more of a "clinical" setting (if that makes sense lol)

I miss it so much, finding another therapist like that (with that kind of natural rapport and familiarity) has been really difficult so far :/.

The 'coffee and chat' idea sounds amazing! I'm sure we would all love it so much! :) Also, the new do is gorgeous!

Was going to leave a comment but seen I already had made one a year ago😂 This issue must still resonate with me.

I’m watching this August 18th and in quarantine. So helpful. After this COVID crisis, I think lots of people should resort to Kati’s videos.

There is no way I would start with a therapist like that. Before I started working with my therapist, I put together a list of 5 potential therapists, and I went and interviewed them all; asking them questions about their backgrounds, how they work, what they specialized in, etc, and most importantly, got a sense of their personaliltys. Then I chose the one I ended up with. I would absolutely NOT talk about my issues until I was sure that I was comfortable with my choice as to WHO I was going to work with.

This made me feel so good. I just booked my first ever session with a psychologist. I can’t wait to get some help. It’s exhausting being in my head.

My therapist had a list of questions for me. It was all general stuff to get to know me. We addressed the big one “why are you here?” at the beginning but didn’t address any of my issues yet. She just wanted to get to know me as a person. Psychologically speaking, that’s the best way to build trust and get someone to like you…ask them questions about themselves and let them talk about themselves.

So thankful for this throwback Kati video. I’m finally taking the jump into therapy and have my first appointment set for Wednesday. While I’ve read nearly every ‘first session’ article, and even seen this video before, your words bring the peace and assurance I need. Thank you for all of the work you have put into mental health awareness and access.
