Can The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Improve an Older Gaming PC's Performance?

So Microsoft have released a new Windows 10 creators update and I've been hearing very different stories about how it's sped up / slowed down gaming performance for some users. If you have an older PC, updates like this are great to hear about and any free performance gains are always welcomed. But are there any, and can such an update save your old gaming system?

Test Specs:
Q9400 Core 2 Quad @ 3GHz
750 Ti 2GB GPU
8GB DDR2
Windows 10

Thanks for watching :)

That "test bed" of q9400 and 750ti was my exact setup for sooo long. Glad to see you test it, and also a good reminder of why I upgraded :-)

I installed the creators update build 1709 the other day. It caused a lot of stuttering in most games I play, especially BF1. I rolled back to 1703 and it fixed the stuttering. The stuttering happened about every 5 seconds in BF1. The FPS dropped to below 30 and then bounced back to 60 in about half a second. It made the game nearly unplayable. I do not recommend 1709 if your rig is already working fine. Build 1709 is not stable enough yet. I'd wait a few months for patches to come out to fix the stuttering. My rig is 2x 1080Ti in SLI, 4790K, 32GB ram. I am using nvidia driver 388.13.

If you are having similar issues, you can roll back to the version you were on by doing the following:
"To uninstall the Creators Update, go to Start > Settings and click on 'Update & security'. Click the Recovery link and then click on 'Get started' under 'Go back to the previous version of Windows 10.'"

tbh, i think replacing the cpu with an older i3 would make this setup better and the creators update would probably benefit better.

One more nail to the coffin of Joker Productions.

Would you consider doing a followup video with the difference with "Game mode" on/off remember you may need to press Win+G on the keyboard to enable it for the games only certain games turn game mode on automatically otherwise you need to manually enable it. Great Video love the channel keep up the great work!

I can confirm that there was an improvement with this update regarding Creators update (1703) especially in old games since before the update the games crashed or blinked if not put at a resolution lower than 1080p, and the few that could, it was all blurry with respect to fps the improvement is minimal, I am very happy with this update.

You should do a video on how emulators run on a budget pc (Like a really budget)

The newest update is a boon for Skyrim LE; it unlocks the 4GB Vram limit allowing us to use more textures without breaking the engine.

Yeah slight improvement with final Redstone 3 build but from Redstone 4 17017 build they fixed low fps on dx9 titles like this "We fixed an issue causing reduced performance in some DirectX 9 games running at high framerates. If you’re a fan of gaming, please take a moment to try playing your favorite games on this build and share feedback". So if those older game titles can really benefit from RS4 branch then I would be interested to run benchmark tests on my 6 year old pc.

You can turn on "gaming mode" with a click of an icon in game bar (win+G) instead of ticking "launch this game in game mode". And task manager (FINALLY!) has GPU meter, so it is very useful to have on secondary screen while gaming. And this is pretty much it. Real boost (software wise) is overclocking and always will be. There is no magic method to get better performance with low end hardware.

i believe in the patch notes for the update a lot was mentioned about improved backward compatibility for directx9 games

of course it can! When I used cemu with an older windows version, I only get 25 - 35 fps on botw. With the creators update, I'm getting 40+ fps. It's a nice update

The most significant thing to come out of this update is that Edge kicks ass now

I've noticed a huge difference in Rayman Legends. My PC was able to easily maintain the 60fps without struggle, but it dropped frames to 40 during specific animation. It was during the stomp attack, the game used to get a noticeable stutter for a moment. The gpu didn't work hard at all, but the stutter occurred. After applying the update, the drop and stutter gone. This little thing makes a big difference. Please be cautious. The update messed up my saves, which only backroll to previous version fixed. But I made an update about week later and now everything is good to go.

the update was the difference between high and ultra settings in forza horizon 3 for me. also id like to note that the r6 siege benchmark before and after was a solid 20% gain

Before installing the update when it first came out, I experienced stuttering and random 100% cpu spikes with my r7 1700 as well as some bluescreens, I had considered another fresh install. After installing the update after it came out the negative effects disappeared entirely and I was back to enjoying myself.

The Black Desert problem was only for the preview update, the final one causes no issues whatsoever.
