My favourite thing about Eric is that he has openly stated that he intentionally does not “dumb down” what he speaks about, be it Mathematics, physics, or economics, or even sociopolitical topics because it insults the audience and they will never be invited or tempted to go deeper, try harder, endeavour to understand more if they are never challenged. They will never come to understand that there is much more nuance and complexity behind the issues we are served up in sound bites and disingenuous headlines. I have taken multiple days to listen to some of his conversations because I had to pause, dig out the dictionary, take time to search up theories, search overviews of advanced maths, etc. to glean more from what he was speaking about. I’ve got an entire running list of books to read, lectures to listen to, concepts to explore because of my time listening to Eric. That is priceless. It’s like he’s been leaving us all breadcrumbs along a path we can plot to achieve our own education.

I applaud him for refusing the rapid fire questions. As he said and has personal experience, it could dog him for months by people just looking to stir up controversy. We are in a very fragile time when students, who weren’t given boundaries by their parents, go off to college and think they have equal or louder voices than those that now have to try to teach them boundaries, and educate them. There is a subset of that demographic that thinks they are wiser than someone twice or three times their age. Because they have phones glued to their hands 24/7. Their phones may be able to acquire more knowledge but that doesn’t mean that young person possesses it.
