If you are just starting out in amateur astronomy then the first thing you'll need to do to make your experience as enjoyable as possible is to learn the night sky-- learn the brightest stars and constellations and the best way to do that is to go out with nothing more than your naked eye, a red headlamp, and a planisphere. In this beginner video I will tell you how to get started.

Love those big planispheres. They are a joy to sit back in a lawn chair and study the constellations. I use a couple. One is the model you show here, the other is a bit larger and shows all the Messier objects. Since I image from a narrow courtyard in winter, I cut a cereal box to mask off the parts of the sky blocked by my house, garage, and casita. It works great for planning sequential photography runs.

Nice explanation except for the lack of a shout-out to the irregular gray band. 🙂

Because of my bright-sky location, I'm in the first group and follow the excellent and trustworthy channels of Dr. Becky, Astrum and Anton Petrov - not to mention a certain underappreciated one. 🙂 (I'm also in the fourth group, but we needn't say any more about that. 🙂)
