Electricity isn't optional - the modern world runs on it. And the demand for electricity increases every day. But our methods for extracting energy and producing electricity does damage to the Earth. How do we fix this? Join Richard Campbell as he explores the evolution of energy production and consumption and the path to a future of sustainable energy - it isn't easy, but it is possible!

Great talk, very interesting but I think it would be better to write the numbers and the names of technologies in the slides when you're saying it. Fortunately I can rewind the video 😉

The claim made at 42:40 about the “IEAE” (he must have meant IEA the International Energy Agency) is very misleading.

You can find multiple reports from the IEA that claim around 30% of ELECTRICITY production is from renewable sources, as of 2024.

But this is not at all the same as global “energy production”, as the speaker claims. Global energy production overwhelmingly comes from non-renewable sources that contribute to global warming. The main source being oil from the ground (mostly shale oil these days). Oil really does make the world go around. In fact, despite all this talk of 2050 and so on, it’s worth pointing out that global oil extraction and usage keeps steadily increasing year after year, even today this is the case. And renewables which generate electricity are not a straightforward replacement for oil.

So this is an extremely misleading claim that conflates “electric power” with “energy”. The optimism here is nice, it’s just false.

I feel like we don't talk about this sort of thing enough.

As attractive as natural gas combined cycle plants are with their added 50% higher efficiency from making steam from their hot exhaust to run a steam turbine most US power grids only use them for peaking power in their simple cycle mode. It is more economical to use the steam cycle turbines generators of their coal powered stations. Wild AC from solar voltaic and wind turbine generators has to be 100% supported by the public power grid with fast reacting peaking power that overwhelming is provided by running natural gas turbine generators at high readiness 70% fuel consumption making nearly zero electricity where 100% output 100% backs up the wild AC.

in Ukraine we switch to renewables for distributed supply, because old huge plants are bombed by ruzzians
