Generally, simplify if you're ahead in pieces.
And keep it closed and risky if you're behind.

I jumped 120 elo when I figured out if you're just 1 peice up and you learn endgames just force trade all the pieces then promote and you'll win

A simple explanation to why it works is not so see numerical advantage but see percentage, if you have 5 points of material and your opponent has 4
if you trade pawns its 4-3, it was a 25% advantage and now its a 33% advantage
