This presentation will take place on the 100th anniversary month of Howard Zinn’s birth on August 24, 1922, in Brooklyn. Although Howard died in 2010, his work continues to inform and inspire educators around the world. His most popular book, A People’s History of the United States, has sold more than 4 million copies.
We will hear from two people who play a leadership role with initiatives designed to carry on and expand the work of Howard Zinn and other people's historians -- Voices of a People's History and the Zinn Education Project. They will describe their work in the context of these times, including how an increasing number of teachers and students are committed to education beyond the confines of a traditional textbook. This interest in learning honestly about the history of white supremacy is being met by an orchestrated attack by the right wing with draconian laws and McCarthy like teacher hit lists. In this Howard Zinn Centennial year, learn what you can do to defend the teaching of people's history.
