Description:

Greece and Bulgaria Went to War Because of a Dog

On October 18, 1925, an unexpected incident near the border town of Petrich led to what is now known as the "Stray Dog War." A dog crossed the Bulgarian frontier, and when a Greek soldier chased after it, the Bulgarian soldiers mistook it for an invasion and opened fire, killing the Greek soldier. This sparked a conflict that escalated quickly.

The Greek president demanded compensation from Bulgaria, but when Bulgaria refused, Greek troops invaded and occupied the town of Petrich and its surrounding region. Small skirmishes broke out along the border, involving 10,000 Bulgarian soldiers and 20,000 Greek soldiers.

The conflict was eventually resolved by the League of Nations, which ordered a ceasefire, the withdrawal of Greek troops from Bulgaria, and for Greece to pay 45,000 pounds in compensation. Despite the resolution, around 50 people lost their lives in this short-lived but intense conflict.

Watch the video to learn more about this unusual and tragic episode in history.

Why are our cities unclean? When this question is asked, fingers are pointed at the municipal bodies and the rampant corruption in the system. The news often tells us we are on the path to becoming Vishwaguru, yet our local bodies are struggling to provide basic facilities like door-to-door garbage collection.

Despite promises and plans, the trash piles up, and citizens are left frustrated. So what’s really going wrong? We explore the challenges local bodies face and why bringing cleanliness to everyone remains an unrealized goal in India.

The Petrich incident was a border conflict between Bulgaria and Greece in 1925. After a Greek invaded Bulgaria illegally and did not respond to warnings, without the Greek authorities warning or asking for permission, the Bulgarian border guards did their job and fired to protect the Bulgarian border, as was proper. After the murder of the Greek soldier, Greek units invaded Bulgarian territory and occupied 10 Bulgarian villages, which they set on fire, killed innocent civilians and children, and raped civilian women. 20, 000 Greek soldiers tried to take the town of Petrich, but they failed because 10, 000 Bulgarian border guards and chetniks from the IMRO stopped them and the Greek soldiers were pushed back about 10 kilometers from the town. The conflict was successfully resolved by the League of Nations. Bulgaria did not even mobilize a single soldier and won. Bulgaria condemns Greece in the UN for the crimes, unfortunately it does not pay all the material damages, and human lives are priceless and cannot be returned with money. And the whole conflict arises from Greece, which provokes it, after the Greeks suffer setbacks in their military with Turkey and kill complexes by killing and raping innocent civilians. The Greek dictator who sent Greek soldiers into this conflict still loses his reputation and his career, but let's say again the lives of the victims we cannot return.
