"We Are Puget Sound: Discovering and Recovering the Salish Sea”
On January 23, 2022, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center welcomed Mindy Roberts, Joe Gaydos and Brian Footen, for the second lecture of the 2021-2022 Future of Oceans lecture series.
For thousands of years, the bountiful land and waters we now call the Puget Sound – a significant part of the Salish Sea – have provided a remarkable home to humans, with food, shelter and connections with others. Coast Salish people rely on salmon and other fish, and shellfish, such as clams, oysters, and mussels. However, human activities over the last two centuries have changed this ecosystem in ways that have strongly impacted the plants, animals and people who rely on these natural resources.
Enjoy this engaging and interactive discussion with several Salish Sea scientists doing amazing and important work.
Mindy Roberts, Puget Sound Program Director at Washington Environmental Council
Joe Gaydos, Science Director, SeaDoc Society
Brian Footen, Founder and principal of Earthviews
"We Are Puget Sound" is a book, traveling photography exhibit and campaign that celebrates the diverse people and communities working to restore the Salish Sea while helping everyone find their place in this movement. Critically endangered orcas and salmon have shown us in recent years that in the face of pollution, population growth, and climate change, it will take all of us to create a future with healthy land, water, wildlife and people!
This event was sponsored by the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, Washington Environmental Council, Mountaineers Books, and Braided River.
