What the Remake's Premiere Does So So Right - Legend of the Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis

I was truly not expecting to like this as much as I did, much less get emotional upon watching the OP, but let's talk about how two shows tackle the EXACT same material in totally different ways. Purists...you're not going to like this one.

This version is much closer to the book in how things unfold. The original animate has cramped material from various other chapters and side stories etc etc hence it is fine for any one who has read the books, but from a initial first time audience view point, the original can be rather confusing.

Military commander is one job where being old fashioned is a massive disadvantage. This series really exemplifies that.

I love how they depict the scifi tech better. Since we have made many advancements since its original writers knowledge base

I'd like to see you return to this, I just finished season 2. As perhaps the only person commenting on this show on the Internet with no attachment to the original I think this remake stands on it's own fantastically.

The reason for Reinhard being uneasy about Yang in the original is due to his encounter in the movie that was released just prior to it that served as a prequel and documented their first encounter- "My Conquest is a Sea of Stars" IIRC

I'm so glad they got rid of the nervous Reinhard, that's something they purely added in the OVA. I don't remember him knowing about El Facil at all in the books or caring about who the hero was. This attitude of confidence (not undeserving), plus borderline arrogance is partly responsible for putting him in the battle of vermilion eventually.

The original being what it was, its first episode works brilliantly. About Reinhardt being aware of Yang, they previously had a confrontation so it's natural too. Both versions work well for what they are. I'll get to the point about how the original's beginning going through all the introductions is part of its subtle narrative but first I'd like to highlight one thing the new one does well.

THE SPACE BATTLE MAP IS FINALLY THREE DIMENSIONAL. It kinda irked me in 1988 version how the maps are basically 2d with slight height for objects, while the holographic picture Lapp had of his fiance was goddamn 3d.

Now, to fulfill my promise, I'll just copy paste a part from my blog post: "I don’t know about the novel but, this anime is a historical fiction; and it surprises me how no one else seems to notice something this obvious. It’s not a historical fiction in the sense that a lot of it parallels many things that has happened throughout history, but rather it’s a historical fiction depicting what happened in the future, written even further in the future. The crude dialogues, pauses in conversations, facial expressions, sudden action, they’re all presented in a manner that feels as if the characters are following a script. The script is written to be natural, and the characters play the roles very well. But it still feels like it’s being acted or it’s a drama that is being told.

The narrator’s words make it even more obvious, while the 80’s & 90’s animation and color palette helps emphasizing the feeling even further. That’s why I always thought that LotGH couldn’t have been made in a more appropriate time. Now, the reason why I consider it a historical fictionalization instead of a simple description of history is because this anime shows detailed interactions among the characters and parts of their personal lives that shouldn’t be available in history. So it’d only make sense if it was a work of fiction written by someone even further in the future, who fictionalized the history to present his story. And the anime embodies this idea through and through."

Will be patiently waiting for the next part of your in-depth Hyouka analysis.

I think they are trying to shift away from the historical narrative of the OVA and try to frame it as a more present narrative than one being told in the past tense. Their are advantages and disadvantages to that, but I think it will produce a unique perspective on the legend that will add something of value to even people like me who've gone through the show in completion about three times now (which is a hard thing to do as you know because 110 mainline + movies + other material is nothing to scoff at). I wouldn't even say I'm completely adept at recalling all the details of the narrative because it's like studying actual history texts.

I love this new version because it not only redesigned the characters but the entire plot is the same, although with a lot of twists especially the main characters despite retaining their original personalities. I really love how Production I.G. hired Mamoru Miyano as the voice of cold, rational, and confident Count Reinhard von Lohengramm. Reinhard, in my opinion, is basically the version of Ultraman Zero who seeks the worthy opponent and counter him in a careful military television series. Coincidentally, Zero and Reinhard are both voiced by Mamoru Miyano himself.

Two thing's I like the most so for is the new deigns for the FPA ships and the updated look of the technology.

As someone who watched entire series and came back to watch the first episode of the OVA again, I like the original first episode more and i even think it's better LoGH episode, but this one is clearly a better pilot. Original overwhelmed you with information and many POVs which I like as a fan but it doesn't work that well for someone who just started the series. To be fair, you're supposed to watch "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars" before watching OVA so I feel like the episode is much better if you do but still not as engaging as this one. Anyway, it was a really good episode and I'm hyped for more.

In the first episode of the original OVA Reinhard knows of Yang's presence because of the movie My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, where they face each other for the first time, the reboot (probably due to lack of time ) is undercutting this previous battle

Really fantastic analysis - clearly a guy who knows his media direction . I wouldn't have noticed that, but now it stands out like a sore thumb how the original basically tells us what's going to happen.

Grate video! And I would love to see more of your thoughts on DNT in future videos! The reason Reinhard is aware of Yang/nerves about him in the first episode of the OVA is because he does encounter him in the short story that was made into the movie "My conquest is in the Sea of Stars." *However* this short story was written well after the first novel so there is no reference to this within that novel. Reinhard's initial disregard of Yang after hearing his broadcast to the FPA forces is an almost word for word adaptation of how he responds in the original novel. In fact a lot of what people are going to object to in DNT as "changes" are actually places where the OVA deviated from the source material to which the new anime is returning.

I haven't watched the remake, so can't say anything about that, but I kind of agree with the minuses of the original OVA that you mention. And I feel like that's exactly why the original movies were so important. They sat the tone and heroes a lot better than first episode of OVA and after watching the movies it was much easier to get into the series. If the remake was able to do that in the first episode than I should probable check that out too, cause this story definitely deserves it!
