He's not insulting, he's a straight forward person. He wants to understand so he can give straight feedback. This happened to the Afghanistan reporter too. It's not easy what he's doing.

Working in the car rental industry, I received a call from Roadside Assistance saying that one of our customers had a mechanical breakdown and needed a replacement car. The Roadside rep was American. She told me that before she connects me with the customer, be warned that I'm having a very difficult time understanding him. I said okay, please connect me to the customer. Turns out the customer was from Scotland and yes, I could barely understand a word he was saying.
