Do have some ways to keep yourself and the people in your home occupied or entertained when sheltering in place, especially if the internet service is down or the cell phone towers get saturated with calls. You do not want a bored teen or preteen in the home. Will they be able to listen to their favorite music or watch a favorite movie even if the internet is down or the electric power is off? How about keeping them busy with a board game, card game, graphic novels, story books, coloring books, word puzzles or art supplies that you have stored in the home?

Can you safely stay in your home if there is a lot of drifting smoke from a wildfire or a lot of dust and other particles from a dust storm or from collapsed buildings after an earthquake? Do you have N95 masks for people to wear indoors, especially for those with asthma? Do you have a way to seal off that fireplace opening and the cracks around exterior doors and windows?

What if the disaster that causes local authorities to issue a shelter in place order also disrupts the water supply? Do you have enough stored water or the ability to fill containers at short notice? You will want at least two gallons of drinking water per person per day for as long as the disaster may last. Remember, water may stop flowing at some point if there is a power outage that impacts the pumping stations. Even if the water keeps flowing, something may have caused the water to get contaminated and local authorities may issue a boil order. Do you have the ability to boil all your tap water even if the local electric grid is down?

Do you have the ability to receive emergency broadcasts and weather news while sheltering in place even if the local internet service or power grid is down? Do you have a battery-powered portable radio and spare batteries? Or a grid-down way to provide power for an electric radio? Can you recharge your smartphone or laptop computer if the local power grid is down? A portable solar panel plus one portable power bank may be all you need to keep your small electronic devices charged.

A burglar alarm will eventually stop working when the local power grid goes down and the back-up batteries are depleted. How will you know if a criminal is trying to break in while you are sleeping? Develop a plan for this. Maybe schedule night watch and fire watch shifts for the adults and teens in the home. Or have a young, medium size, short-haired, indoor dog who will bark and alert you if someone is prowling outside your home. I would avoid relying upon the nervous, miniature dog breeds because they may bark at every little noise instead of just at potential intruders.

Make sure you have sex, drugs, and rock-'n'-roll. Party like it's the end of time. If you survive everything will be alright.
