As a native Hebrew speaker, I feel like I have to correct some inaccuracies:

It's עשרת הדברות, not דברים, which literally translates to "The Ten Spoken things". Pronounced as "Aseret HaDivrot"

Also most of them are written in the imperative tone ("thou shalt/ shalt not..."), which is a commandment in all but name.

I feel like it"s important to note that most people misremember it as "do not kill" when most modern translations (can't speak for the older ones) say the much more specific and explicit "do not *murder*"

On the surface they seem similar/the same, but the connotstiond id what makes them very different

meaning - 'aseret hadibrot
this in Hebrew ACTUALLY MEANS the ten sayings

Moses also came down with an entirely different, higher law, but due to the idol worship Moses broke those, went back up to the mountain and the Lord gave him different, lesser commandments which are now the 10 commandments. Doesn’t mean they’re less important, just means there’s a higher law.

German reformer Martin Luther called them "Die Zehn Gebote", which literally translates to "The Ten Commandments", nearly 90 years before the publication of the King James Bible.

Wait, wasn't the king James bible translated in the 1600s? The first complete Hungarian translation was done about 100 years earlier and that also calls them the ten commandments (parancsolat). the translator used the Hebrew text along with the Vulgate and Septuagint to make his translation. Luther's German translation also used the term commandments (Gebote).

Tbh it makes sense, the 10C list examples of how one can fail at what is expected of them (Loving God and Loving People), its more like a starting point for slowly readjusting people to living in step with God
