Stuart Hall's Encoding and Decoding Explained

this video wraps up my discussion of semiotics. Stuart Hall's work on encoding decoding really launches semiotics into cultural studies and that's where I want to take you next.

Encoding and decoding attempts to connect the very linguistic practice of semiotics with the very tactile experience of discourse. Discourse is a theory by Michel Foucault that tries to understand how language effects how people are treated in the real world. A part of that connection involves the codes that words are encoded with and the actions that result from those words being decoded.

Hope you guys find this video helpful. Let me know if you have any questions in the comment section.

You're such a great teacher! Not only did you make this understandable, you made it interesting and easy to listen to too! You should (for my, and other students sake) do a podcast! I havent found any good podcast on communicatino science, it's all generalized sociology or psychology.

Fascinating stuff. It's crazy how these things are so easy to miss when you're not paying attention, and as a STEM major I'm 100% guilty of being inattentive to Comm studies, even though I communicate every day 🤣. Thanks for the vid, and for gracing my feed with your presence 😍😍😘
