As a retired teacher, I was terrified where this was going. It could have been worse.

The first time I ever called Poison Control was when I was 14 and babysitting a 4-year-old boy. I was in the process of making his dinner and saw him chewing something and then spitting it. I asked him what he had in his mouth. He replied "The candies that were in the dish, but they're yucky!" I ran to the dish (thank God he hadn't eaten them all) and so they were some type of medication. I scooped him up, laid him face down on the counter next to the sink and rinsed his tongue off. I grabbed the remaining pills and called Poison Control, who identified them as 800mg Motrin. They told me to call his parents and tell them they were going to send an ambulance just in case there were other meds in the candy dish besides the Motrin. This was pre-cell phones so I had to call the restaurant. It turns out that Dad had tweaked his back golfing, and one of his golf buddies was a doctor who gave him some samples. Why he decided to take them out of the little manila pill envelope and put them in a candy dish on the china hutch in the kitchen is beyond me 😅

😂 When my youngest was six, we moved from the house we’d lived in since before the kids were born. When we were finally to the point of packing the big furniture, we moved the sofa and during the shaking of it leaving the living room, a Skittle fell out of it, apparently having fallen between the cushions and then between the wooden boards for who knows how long until the jostling of moving that heavy beast released it. My little guy snatched up that unexpected reward and popped it into his mouth before we saw anything. I noticed him chewing and asked him what he was eating. He very seriously said, “A skittle.” I asked him where he got a Skittle. Just as seriously, he said, “From the couch.” 😐

My dad was in the grocery store and saw a woman give her kid a candy bar. While the child was unwrapping it, he dropped it on the floor. The kid picked up the candy, and mom said, "Oh, throw it away!" The kid said, "it's okay, mom, I'll just lick the dirt off!"

That just reminded me of this old memory when I found a dirty old really dusty sourpatch kid under some shelves and I thought I just found gold. I ate that sour patch kid. Now I feel gross remembering it 🥲

Honestly, kids do gross things cause they don’t understand the actuality of what they are doing. My sister and I used to crawl around on the bus floor for stray candy and eat it (distinctly remember eating scattered smarties that I found, thought I’d hit the jackpot)
