Infrared Camera

We use an infrared camera to look at objects of different temperatures (ice, hot water, candle flame). We then look at objects made of different materials (acrylic, plastic trash bag, aluminum plate) to see which ones are transparent in the infrared vs the visible part of the spectrum. Finally, liquid nitrogen is poured over a cup of hot water.

The camera we use is a FLIR E-95, which can detect wavelengths in the 7.5-14 micron range. Never attempt to drink liquid nitrogen!

I know this is off-topic, but fun fact: If you buy an infrared camera with this high a framerate in the U.S., your purchase and name go in a government database.
But don't worry; you probably can't afford them. They're not nearly as cheap as guns. :)

sorry but the mask was actually more interesting than the demos themselves and shows that you could easily very accurately passively monitor the respiration rate of eg. patients in an ER waiting room with a software video analyzer alone.

This instrument, the bolometer (and its predecessor, the thermopile), has led us to quantum mechanics, where all matter with a temperature radiates IR photons and to greenhouse theory (black body radiation curves etc) where only a special set of gases absorb and emit. Isn't that a contradiction? Why doesn't it measure the air? Does air, 99% gaseous N2 and O2, not have a temperature and not radiate? Yes, it does have a temperature; so, is quantum mechanics wrong?
