I think the description of the "eager face" comes from his love of his work. As we know, Sherlock Holmes considers anything that isn't his work as "extras, " like love, and emotions in general. We only see one instance where Sherlock Holmes expresses true real concern where Watson is grazed by a bullet, but Sherlock immediately sits him down and asks him if he is okay.

To me an eager face is more about eyes than a big goofy smile, I can't picture a scenario where I would be eager for something and be squinting
