I’m a cellist, I had no idea you guys were making it so much harder 😂😂 I can’t imagine fingering every note during arpeggios 😂

That last harmonic on the high A is insane. It was written to be played in 3rd position, with the harmonic a fourth above the stopped note A. That is how most violinists play it. But Mr. Hadelich found the alternative of playing it in the sixth position, with the harmonic a *fifth* above the stopped note D. Genius. This gives a clearer and more resonant tone because touching harmonics farther away from the stopped point widens the spacings between string nodes. In other words, it sounds better.

Hearing this made me completely overhaul my runs and arpeggios.
It’s such a good tip… ⭐️

You just need Augustin's resolve, skill and many years of practice to make those harmoics ring.

I don’t know the first thing about string instruments but what you do with this violin is absolutely amazing. ❤

Many violinists *do* use harmonics/open strings for fast passages, especially when descending. It's in the standard scale books (except Flesch, but he covers it in Art of the Violin[1].) I wouldn't say harmonics are guaranteed to be in tune though, I trust my ears much more than my strings under stage lights and a/c (even if the strings somehow stay perfectly in tune, the winds and brass will go sharp anyway 😂)

Cellists can bend the pitch of natural harmonics a huge amount without losing the resonance, I think this is why they use them even in slow passages. Cellists also are imitating low voices that have slower vibrato than the high voices the violin imitates so the lack of vibrato and change in timber isn't as harmful to expressiveness as it is on violin.

1. Flesch even talks about using the slow response of the string when the finger is lifted slowly from a high position to use harmonics without any fingers at all (the example given is Paganini 5). I was also taught by a Galamian student how to use harmonics with no fingers touching the string to cover string crossings so this is reasonably standard in modern violin playing.

The Flesh scale book with the same fingering in every key was supposed to be just a supplement to Art of the Violin, but people used it as their entire scale practice so many of the details aren't in the scale book itself.

My boys got that "My name is giovanni giorgio, but everybody calls me giorgio." sound to his voice. I could listen to him talk about Violins all day.

Also I love the pattern sticking out of the seams of his shirt!

FULLY AGREE... in fact, Itzhak Perlman uses harmonics in his 1980 performance of th Tchaikovsky with the Philadelphia Orchestra (om YouTube).

very good hint - that is a blessing of youtube: knowledge can travel so much faster and be incorporated maybe not by everyone but everyone can pick up something and give something and of course if such big masters do it it can change a lot by a one minute video. thx for your contribution and thx for enrichting my life with your great music !!!!

Harmonics also help you to map where you are on the violin/viola, thank you for the uploads.

Wow! That’s a super good tip but I don’t think us plebeians can use it with such amazing success😭 Augustin Hadelich is a phenomenal violinist!❤
