In Episode 3 of my Isan series, I take you to the heart of Udon Thani’s Vietnam Town—the only official Vietnam Town outside of Vietnam! This vibrant, food-filled community is a perfect example of how friendly and welcoming Isan people are. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm smiles, incredible hospitality, and some of the best street food you can imagine.

Here’s what I tried:

🥖 Banh Mi – Crisp baguettes loaded with fresh fillings.
🥥 Kanom Kroc – Thai coconut pancakes that are impossible to resist.
🥞 Banh Cuon – Soft, steamed rice rolls filled with savoury goodness.
🥓 Banh Xeo – Crispy Vietnamese pancakes, packed with flavour.
🍢 Bun Cha – Grilled pork skewers so good, they blew me away!

The food was incredible, but what really stood out was the generosity and warmth of the locals. Whether they were handing out free tasters, chatting about their recipes, or simply making me feel at home, this experience truly showed me the heart of Isan culture.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this YouTube channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!

If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Such a great find Gary, would have love to interact with them in Vietnamese. I guess most of the Vietnamese migrated to Thailand during the Vietnam war. I know Thailand was an option for us back in 1975, glad we got on the plane instead 🛫. Merry Christmas and a Joyful one to you and your family 💓🙏

Near Udon Thani you can also visit the former house of Ho Chi Minh where he previously lived in exile. Quite a large diaspora of ethnic Vietnamese in the region.

The banh xeo is how I make it. The cai luong vong co (cultural opera music) is epic. Thank you Gary for rolling back time that brings me to childhood memories.

Just two comments. Never knew that Banh Mi could be that crispy, and that sure looked and sounded delicious. The Banh Cuon was something special. It's been many decades, but I still miss being able to get dishes like that every day. And you're up in the area of Thailand that made the most impression on me back in those days. Thanks for finally getting to Isaan. Did you ever get to Surin also?
