Sam and Dean kill Eve, before her death she mentions Crowley is still alive. Some kids they saved earlier were killed by demons, leading them to think what Eve said was true. Castiel says it's impossible, he burned Crowley's bones, he should be dead. Sam, Dean, and Bobby discuss Castiel working with Crowley and if they're just overthinking. Castiel listens in on this conversation, hears what they said in private, meets with them, quotes them directly as if he was there, tipping them to know he was spying on them. They lure him to a recently cleaned out demon outpost, and trap him.

In S06E19, after the team put down Eve, they talk between each other about if what Eve said about Crowley being alive is true after finding 2 kids they saved prior in the episode killed by demons. Castiel says it's impossible for Crowley to be alive because he burned his bones (we see this in S06E10) which kills the related demon. Castiel says he'll look into it, and feathers away. Bobby and Sam walk away thinking something isn't right about this whole situation. Dean doesn't think anything of it, leading him to ask what they're both being silent about. Bobby tells Dean that it's not like Castiel to make a mistake, let alone a mistake the size of this one, unless he meant to.

At the beginning of episode 20, Castiel pops into the Impala when Dean is heading to meet with Sam on a "Jinn hunt". Castiel asks more questions then leaves. When Dean meets with Sam and Bobby, he tells them about Castiel popping in him and that he told them nothing about what the three are really doing, which is hunting Crowley. Whilst talking about Castiel, Bobby mentions that if Castiel is working with Crowley that they now have a Superman gone darkside, and that they need to stock up on some kryptonite.

Later, Castiel saves them from a demon attack, and Deans asks Bobby "What do you think about Castiel saving us again?", which they then tell him what they were really doing. Castiel mentions it's silly, and quotes their private conversation earlier that he wasn't there for. This is a dead giveaway he was spying on them, leading them to believe he's working with Crowley. This is them trapping him. Since Castiel is an angel, he cannot escape the holy fire surrounding him.

People are missing the point. It’s not just about how Cas worked with Crowley. It’s about how he lied to them about it. In their face. The entire time. And Crowley hurt them, he hurt Ben and Lisa, all while Cas was still working with him. And Cas had the chance to ask Dean for his help at the very start. Hell, he was actually about to do it, but still ended up choosing Crowley over him in the end. Not to mention the consequences of all his actions here later on, with the mass murders and the leviathans. I fucking love Cas, but man did he fucked up. But well, it’s Supernatural. They all fuck up in some way or another and I still love them regardless.

I love how everybody just kinda acknowledges the fact that Dean and Castiel have this unspoken bond and it’s even acknowledged here in the scene where it’s Dean asking the question knowing that Cass isn’t gonna lie to dean And what makes it so emotional is how Dean’s heart breaks, but also Castiel realizes the betrayal as well and even he breaks a little
