I used to listen to these stories when having dinner as a child. That was over 24 years ago now.

In the 1950s, 5 o'clock every weekday after school 'Children's Hour' on the Home Service was a must on the wireless. David Davis dulcet tones have remained with me all these years, never was there a better story teller.

Like probably most people, I only knew of Kipling's Just So Stories by reputation, as fanciful stories about how animals got their strange shapes, but I had never heard that Kipling liked toying with words and getting them deliberately slightly wrong, as in the 'satiable courteosity' of the Elephant Child.
