In this video, which is a part of our series, Film Noir Movie Reviews, we talk about "In A Lonely Place", which came out in 1950 and stars Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame. The movie was directed by Nicholas Ray.

We both love this movie. It has a complex emotional love story, and deals with domestic abuse, violence, inner demons and individuality being crushed by one's society.

The performances and direction are fantastic and in our opinion it's one of the best Film Noirs ever made.

I bought this as a blind buy last year and loved the movie.
The writing and acting are superb. The movie more than holds up today.

I think Dix is incapable of love in a true sense. he is more obsessed with the Gloria Graham character

I am solidly in the “It’s over because he choked her” camp. Laurel found out Dix wasn’t the murderer just after his act of violence made the point moot. I read that an earlier draft of the script had Dix actually kill Laurel. Ray changed it because actually killing her, while a neat O’Henry-style ending, was beside the point.

I’ve never read the novel (written by Dorothy Hughes), but I’m told it’s very different from the movie. (For one thing, Dix is a serial killer.) Dixon Steele would probably approve of that, but I don’t get why directors bother to adapt a book if it’s not faithful.
