A temple of beauty, a mountain with many suns, an ideal functional building - this is all about the Alvar AALTO library in Vyborg. The book depository and the reading room are an unusually bright room without a single window! Sunlight evenly illuminates the hall through 57 portholes in the ceiling. But the staircase and the lecture hall are glazed from floor to ceiling in order to visually include both the park and the street into the room. Built in 1935, the library survived two wars: the Soviet-Finnish and the Great Patriotic. It was restored only in 1961. And the real restoration ended only in 2013.
