Car Wash Tips | How to Avoid Scratches & Swirls

As winter creeps closer, I 'm making the most of hand washing in the driveway while I still can. In this video, I discuss some tips for washing your car without scratching the paint. Enjoy!

I have also found using soft warm water is much better than hard cold water. It dissolves dirt much easier and dries virtually spot free. And it uses a lot less car wash detergent.

I notice most people, including professionals use the 2 bucket method. You could also use 1 bucket but with more microfiber wash mitts. Also a leaf blower does wonders to dry cars if you own one.

I personally like to use the blotting technique for drying the car, it minimises chances of creating scratches while drying

Nice video mate. Agree with your video I also have another main way of reducing swirls and Scratches. Use 2 mits for the car. 1 for the top and middle of the car. And a 2nd for the lower parts. Also use a separate bucket for the wheels. Never use the same bucket that you use for the body, on the wheels, even if you thoroughly rinse them out. And last thing invest in a decent detail spray to use when drying as it lubricates the surface. Btw your alloys are the nicest I’ve ever seen on a bmw. Suit the car so well. Anyway take it easy. I use one bucket. Even if you use a second bucket to rinse it's still theoretically possible to get dirt particles if there is dirt getting in the second bucket without rinsing bucket out. If car is rinsed well enough, and nothing is really on the car one bucket should be ok. I would hose my wash mitt every so often, and the pressure of the hose on the mitt will more likely free up any dirt in it. I use the same bucket for the wheels but I rinse it out a few times before using it for the body of the car itself. Nice video overall. A hand wash place damaged my car from a belt buckle a worker had exposed while leaning on rear quarter panel to clean rear windshield. I wash it myself now. I don't want another paint job.

When I wash my car I always start form the top and work my way down so all the dirt can flow down with gravity

You should consider doing paint job on break calipers... I am planing on doing that my self once I get my car back from mechanic

Thanks for the info. I am goin to quit washing my truck in those coin car washes, im a little nervous on polishing my truck. It has a lot of swirl marks from improper washing

I think a few very important points you forgot to mention was how the soap goes on. The best method is a soap canon. And when drying, try not to go in swirls, don't apply pressure and go in smooth straight lines along the paint.
