In May 2020 – amid pandemic – the European Commission announced the 2030 EU Biodiversity Strategy. Among its goals is the restoration of 25,000 km of rivers. This can be done by removing or adapting barriers, such as dams.

Aoos in Greece is the last free flowing river in Europe. A unique opportunity for Greece – as a member state – to use it as a best practice example for the restoration of more European rivers into free-flowing ones.

The Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos [MedINA] along with six national and international organisations are implementing the project “Saving Europe’s last free flowing wild river: Vjosa-Aoos.” The project is part of the international campaign @Save The Blue Heart of Europe. MedINA and Pindos Perivallontiki are the main Greek partners of the project.
