Mars could be our future home, but only if we figure out a faster way to get there.

How Far Away is Mars?
“The distance to Mars depends on when you measure it, and which vantage points you're considering. Just how far away is the Red Planet?”

NASA's Nuclear Thermal Engine Is a Blast From the Cold War Past
“Nuclear thermal propulsion, which was studied in the Cold War for space travel, could make a comeback to fly humans to Mars.”

Basics of Space Flight | NASA
“When traveling among the planets, it's a good idea to minimize the propellant mass needed by your spacecraft and its launch vehicle. That way, such a flight is possible with current launch capabilities, and costs will not be prohibitive.”

Nasa will send humans to Mars by 2030. SpaceX: Hold my beer

Never tell humans something is hard or impossible to do. It will be seen as a challenge and for that reason I honestly think there is almost nothing that humanity can't achieve when it puts its mind to it. This is equally terrifying as it is something to be proud of.

i think we should go back to the moon first before we go to mars. setting up colonies on the moon first,  will teach us alot about living in space, so that we will be much better prepared to go on deep spaces missions like to mars. also, since the moon is really close to earth, getting to the moon will be a lot faster and cheaper to set up space colonies there, than on mars, which will allow us to start learning how to live in space sooner.

I care a lot more about what SpaceX is doing because they actually want to colonize Mars instead of just planting a flag and doing a few experiments. I'm pretty pumped about NASA's latest Martian rover though. Can't wait to see if the on board drone will actually fly.

Well, in my youth -- way, way back in the early 1960's -- I was promised a rocket pack. I'm still waiting, soo . . .

One option is to bag it up. Literally, bag that spaceship up. Graphene ink is conductive and on the surface of a plastic bag, a massive bag, it can provide a magnetic shield, and even house a massive living space for plants. The bag can even be like bubble wrap, multi layered bubble wrap. However each camber is sealed and opened with magnetic and conductive inks. If a flat is detected sealant is just pumped into the intersecting bubble chamber. Safe enough for plants, to have enough time to grow.

I am currently reading 'The Martian' and in the book the trip lasts between 8 and 9 months... cool!

I love NASA, but they are no longer risk takers. I doubt they'll be the first to send men to Mars and I think 2030s is an overenthusiastic estimate for them.
