Ikaria has a unique patern of urbanism: : Houses are well away from each other, so it looks like it’s not very populated, though it was a way of defense, in the past, mostly against pirates. Given it has springs of water all around, they could spread, their villages, so that the invaders had to choose, where to attack, giving time and space to the locals to defend properly, which they did.

This is not Ikaria I remember like 30-35 years ago. It used to be an exciting unique island. I have hundreds of stories on the Ikarian way of living: The slow pace of so-called Ikarian time, the taverna owners in Evdilos who would lock their tavernas and go home but let us with our food and wine on the table to sit as much as we'd like and pay the bill the next day, even though they didn't know us. The same taverna owners who refused to serve us old fish, when the fishing boats didn't go out to the sea to bring fresh. The flashing mirrors on the mountains, waving to the passing boats, the kafeneio in Raches. The young campers at the beaches who played their guitars until morning and the panegyria in the villages. Has the island changed so much?

Historically this was an extremely poor island. My grandparents hail from this island and as they said most likely the “ poor” food, going everywhere on foot, and friends and family kept them healthy. Tourism, thank you very much, will destroy this island.
