7th Grade Math 1.1a, Modeling Sums of Integers with the Same Sign

We begin by reviewing the definition of integers as negative and positive whole numbers. We use colored counters to add positive integers, and to add negative integers. The color of the counter represents the sign of the integer. We show how you can make your own counters to model the addition of integers that have the same sign. When we add LIKE signs, the sum is LIKE the addends.
