Now Silva has gone, Chelsea are lacking leadership and quality at CB when there has always been someone there (even going back to the days of Desailly and LeBeouf). The two Monaco lads have been shite and the ostracising of Chalobah has put us in a VERY precarious situation for this season. It's not gonna be pretty...😢

as a chelsea fan, i think the pros far outweigh the cons of the preseason. the defensive issues are fixable and it’s also clear that there were plenty of players not going 100% most likely to not risk injury. Also, the fact that we created the amount of chances we did without Cole Palmer is encouraging, last year we had no shot without him lol at the end of the day we’ll really get to see where we’re at with that first game against City

Really good breakdown and I'm in agreement. Most of the goals they've conceded are very fixable. I think the biggest issue is definitely personnel. It looks like no one is control of the defensive line. Additionally, I think we saw last season that their defenders are quite slow to react to what's happen. They might be better served playing it a bit safer and not pressing so high.

I don't think it's a Maresca problem. It's definitely the players as we've seen them make these mistakes under a few different managers now.

At least they have a pattern of play and clear areas of improvement now. Poch's chaosball had no future.

The problem is a lot of our defenders were brought in when Tuchel was managing and he used a 3 at the back with wingbacks. So most our defenders are not used to playing in system were there isn't much coverage coming from the wings. This is why they struggled under Poch, because he used a 4 at the back system that was very narrow when defending. The narrowness allowed wide players on opposing teams to have a lot of success against us on the wings. You can even go as far back as the Antonio Conte days to see that the Chelsea defense was always better under a 3 at the back plus wingbacks system.

Just like MU transitioning from Ole-Ball to modern football, this is not a smooth process for Maresca and Chelsea

The thing is this Pep style box midfield tactics is not the same tactical novelty it was like 2 years ago when Pep starting pushing Stones into the midfield making the box and teams have already learned to counter it pretty easily and the reality is Chelsea do not have players like Rodri Ederson Stones De Bruyne Bernardo who are masters of ball retention and avoiding counter pressing from other teams.

Bro. You should be hired by Chelsea FC as the club's TEAM/TACTICAL ANALYST. Well done

Once Enzo went down and the reigns were given to Caicedo while providing 2 defensive runners like Gallagher and Cuccurela behind him the team started winning. It all starts with the midfield. If you can control it it’s half the battle.

I use similar tactics. But the key differences are:
1. In build-up, the keeper and 3 defenders are deep and wide. So it's a really wide and deep back 4.
2. There are 2 DMs Central on the edge box. So a deep back 6 in general.
3. The 2 advanced MFs start very wide
4. The front 3 are high and wide. But with the cf dropping deep regularly
This setup attempts to build out wide and creates a lot of opportunities for artificial transitions if a team decides to press you.

I think Brighton's going to be a very fun team to watch this season, maybe you can make a video about Hurzeler's tactics.

As you noted, key players are still out e.g Cucurella, Jackson and Palmer. Those three I believe will make a massive impact. Jorgenson from what I saw in the Madrid game is much more suited to the system than Sanchez.

Chelsea also need new Cb a leader like del light that will improve a lot for chelsea defense

This needs pointing out. You are not only offering analysis of positioning, but also relating it to other teams_, which I find absolutely invaluable. A lot of videos just describe the patters of play, but they kinda exist in a suspended void. The way you related the positions of 8's in Maresca's system to Pep and Arteta was very very illuminating. A lot of teams have similar buildup, and highlighting _differences is fascinating, so I hope you incorporate it in the future too.

I don't think he has a problem of finding the right players, they are right there. The problem is the price tag on some of them so they "have to" start. Enzo can't play the same time with cai...it's just not possible in this system. Man like levi can't start either he is over rated.

With Palmer inside that channel instead of Enzo, their attacks is gonna be good but i wanna ask in their defensive structure, who's gonna pair with Caicedo or lavia(DBH or Palmer) assuming the will defend in a 442(which I think they will)
