Tim Holtz Distress Ink & Distress Stain on Polymer Clay

Topics Covered In This Video:

* Today in the PcT Test Lab we are testing the compatibility of Rangers Tim Holtz Distress Ink and Distress Stain on Premo Polymer Clay.

* If you have ever seen our videos, we like to test different products on polymer clay to see if they are compatible. I have used lots of the Tim Holtz Distress products on polymer clay before, but this is the first time I have tried his Distress Stain and Distress Ink products.

* I was not sure if they will work because they are a water based product that is meant for porous materials which can be reactivated with water.

* I made two samples of Premo polymer clay where I added the wet stain/ink onto raw polymer clay, and then baked the samples at 275F for one hour.

* The baked samples were then left for a couple months to see if the inks would react with the polymer clay over time.

* Neither sample had any reaction, and appeared to have dried nicely on the surface of the clay.

* But when rubbed with my finger, most of the color came off quite easily... and was completely removed with a baby wipe.

* My conclusion is that this product is not suitable for polymer clay when used in this manner.

* Since there was no reaction though, it may be possible to mix the ink/stain into raw polymer clay as a colorant, but that would need further testing to be sure.

* I have had success with other Tim Holtz Distress products on polymer clay such as Distress Paint, Distress Embossing Powders and Distress Crackle Paint (on raw clay only)... just not this Distress Stain or The Distress Ink so far.

Could you do a video spraying or putting the distress stain/ink INTO the clay then baking it?  I would love to see how this would result...Thanks for sharing this video and not sugar coating nor slandering the product.

could I possibly combined oil based paint to wet clay for a more pigmented color? I feel that clay by itself is too dull

Maybe they would stay on if a sealer or varnish was applied afterward.

_This product is definitely not suitable for polymer clay.I think Tim Holtz is going to be sad by seeing this. But it is going to inspire him to make a new product which is compatible with polymer clay.So it works for him in every way._

I love all your videos especially since I am so new to polymer clay, less then 2 years now and I love it.  I want to incorporate everything with polymer know it isn't possible, but I try...  Anyway, since this video was made Tim Holtz came out with his Distress Oxides which I believe are dye and pigment.  Do you think those would work better then the inks and the stains you experimented with in this video?  Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos and all your inspiration.  I'm still learning to do skinner blending and very simple canning, just can't seam to grasp it yet.

Thank-you I was thinking of buying some distressed ink to try out. Now I won't . At least not for my polymer clay! Thanks again!

Hi Cindy, this question isn't related to the video. I was wondering if you have ever had a chance to use the DREAM machine by Artway tools? They sell them on Polymer Clay Express. It looks like a really wonderful roller. It's built with 10 thickness settings and it's suppose to be easy to clean because it doesn't have those scraper bars. The thing is it costs $345.00 which isn't cheap so I wanted to see if you have had a chance to use one. If so how did you like it? I just want to make sure it's worth the price before I buy one. Any info you could give me would be great. Thanks! Dee

Have you tried the new distress oxide paints, the inks or the pads? If so, did you have to thin them out or add unto some other surface? Thanks a lot!

can you use distress ink and dab it on transparent clay before baking to colour it rather than using the inks in the bottles?
