Nikon Z9 Firmware 3.0 Low Light Eye-AF Test

The good news is that with FW 3.0, that problem is gone: it can easily focus down to EV 1.5 (or probably lower) even in AF-C mode and a1 custom setting set to Focus + Release (default), the AF finds the eye with little to no hesitation. Bravo, Nikon!

This was recorded with an Atomos Ninja V with the Nikon Z9 with the 50mm f1.2 on a tripod. The subject was lighted with an Amaran 100x with Aputure lantern softbox.

If you want a *real* low light AF test, shoot dark-skinned people on a dance floor when the venue lights are turned *way* down, the only light is colored, dim, dancefloor lights, and *there's very little contrast to help the camera focus*. THAT would be a good test for the high-megapixel Z9. Haven't seen any reviewer do that yet; THAT would be useful. No shade to you, but you have a nice, even, light on the mannequin's face and eyes, at base ISO 100 (even though it's 1/3 sec); the room's not well lit, but the mannequin's face *is*.

Yes, had the same issues like you and they are fixed now. The only thing i can see in single point, in really dark conditions, if my 50 1.2 is really out of focus the camera will slowly get in to focus. The trick is, lets say is, to focus for a bit then lift my finger from the af button then press it again and the camera will focus faster.
