The Soviets were definitely not willing to support Iran, the winning faction of the Iranian revolution was explicitly anti-Soviet and Pan-Islamic, this terrified the Soviet Union which had large Muslim populations, Iraq was already a friend of the Soviets and once the Iran Iraq war started, the Soviets were more than happy to support Saddam against Iran. in fact the Soviet relationship with post-revolution Iran was much worse than under the anti-Communist Shah who had a workable relationship with the Soviets.
