Gentle Giant’s albums featured many songs with both literary subjects as well as social and personal commentary on life as rock musicians. “Free Hand” has more than most. The album’s title & first track was named “Freehand” because the band had just changed record labels and management and felt unshackled by prior contractual obligations. Putting these issues behind them upon its first release, Gentle Giant embarked on an extensive tour of North America and Europe, plus a short tour of the UK, to promote the album.

The incredible range of Gentle Giant's music is evident throughout this album. From the intricate vocal fretwork of “On Reflection” and the delicate medieval flavor of “Talybont” the Celtic-tinged rock of “Time To Kill” and the jagged rhythms of “Just The Same” all those diverse elements which made the band so strikingly original are skillfully blended and perfectly executed.

Gentle Giant is the most hidden of hidden gems of the 70s prog scene.

The proof that pop/rock can be more than fashion, posing, hype and marketing.
These guys could play their instruments and compose substantial pieces that stand the test of time. And, for anyone fortunate enough to see them, they enjoyed it and it was fun too! (PS. during the verses of Just The Same, the bass and drums are playing in 6/4 while the piano, voice, and guitar are playing in 7/4).

Just the Same, one of the greatest intros ever! The finger snapping, the piano, the guitar, Derek’s voice, all unique and inter played so well.

There are a select amount of small groups of truly original musicians, and Gentle Giant is one of those groups. They changed my life, and like many, many others, elevated the taste and understanding of music. We all enjoy music, but this group actually taught us about classical, jazz, fusion, and progressive music through rock and roll. Their recent resurfacing is a true inspiration.

Even on my crappy phone speakers I can tell Steven has once again found the heart of the music.

Is it possible to make a masterpiece still better ?
A: Yes, it is.

This group seemed to escape many during the time. It wasn't for any lack of talent. I'm happy that they are probably more popular today than back in the beginning. The cream will always rise, even though it takes 50 years.

What can I say about this elixir? Zappa was right about this group. They hit the scene and suddenly they were gone. Good to see an emergence of this great music. Only saw them once in concert. My loss. They seemed to disappear.

Gentle Giant is currently experiencing a second life! A musical reincarnation more than 40 years after the band's initial recognition.

Thank you, Steven Wilson, for continuing to breathe new life into these fabulous old recording gems for the internet. You are truly waking a sleeping Gentle Giant.

Iw was lucky enough to catch them on the Glass House tour. They had a quad sound system. Amazing show!

This music is brilliant, like all GG's songs btw. And the animation is excellent too! Noah Shulman certainly watched Monty Python!

I usually don't like the Steven Wilson mixes, but the heavier bass and drums here works.
