Part 3 of the Secret Life of a Cell series introduces the largest structure inside a eukaryotic animal cell, the nucleus. Protected by a plasma membrane, the nucleus houses another structure called the nucleolus, home to the vast majority of genes and the primary site of ribosome synthesis. The nucleus is a densely packed conglomerate of chromatin regulatory proteins called histones, which organize strands of DNA into chromosomes and autosomes. Part 3 also discusses the structure of a chromosome, keeper of the cell's genetic code.
