Just a small correction: After black plays 3...c5 and white goes 4.Bxf6 the move Kramnik played 4...gxf6 is correct (and is the mainline), because exf6 would leave the d5 pawn isolated and weak. If you do want to capture back with the e pawn (simpler), then it is best to play ...c6, rather than ...c5 on move 3. Of course the Tromp has been a perfectly respectable opening, since Julian Hodgson made it popular decades ago, as others have already pointed out.
