If you can't call a ball out with near 100% certainty, call it in. Period. If you're playing people who don't follow this mindset, find other people to play with.

A good way to remember the kitchen rule is if you were in the kitchen in the "past", "present" or "future" it is a kitchen fault.
you are in the kitchen, jump up, hit the ball out of the air without letting it bounce, and you land outside the kitchen, it is a kitchen fault.
you are in the kitchen and hit the ball out of the air without letting it bounce, obviously this is a kitchen fault.
you are outside of the kitchen, jump up, hit the ball while you are in the air without letting it bounce, and you land in the kitchen, it is a kitchen fault.

I'M CONFUSED: I use a DROP-SERVE, exclusively and EXTEND MY ARM AS HIGH AS I CAN BEFORE DROPPING THE BALL. Two days ago--2 different people told me that a new 2024 rule prohibits that. So, today I sat down to watch YOUTUBE Videos on the 2024 Rule Changes regarding a drop serve, but thus far I have seen NOTHING about height changes for a drop serve. Please advise. Rick

Hey! We can say "out" when the ball is in the air. It is player communication BEFORE the ball hits the ground. After it hits the ground, it then becomes a "line" call.

Probably worth specifically calling out the difference between PPA rules and USAP volley serve rules. Many ams hear about various serve rules when watching pro games(using PPA rules) and think they apply to ams (esp throwing ball up on volley serve) who generally use USAP rules. So many people get this confused....

Not specifically mentioned in the review of drop serve rules, but the application of force to the ball applies to upward as well as downward force. You can not propel the ball upwards, let it bounce, and then serve.

Great Job! I really enjoyed the double hit vs the carry definition!

Good vid young man. Points were explained clearly and delivered at just the right pace with repetition to reinforce. And that’s coming from me in the UK getting to grips with all the nuances of pickle ball. All power to you. 😃

If you’re playing rec games, you could establish before the game that if it’s a borderline call just re serve

You said that if the ball hits the net and goes over (without hitting anywhere else but the top) it is good, “Unless it’s a serve” my understanding has always been that if it hits the net, but still lands in the correct box, it is good. Has this changed? Was I wrong?

It is fun to see evolution and rules changes. My friend an I in the past played a game we invented. A mix of soccer and american football. And everytime a situation we did not planned happened we had to create a new rules...

So you explained when not to hit a ball in the kitchen but not when you can hit a ball in the kitchen please advise the players who don't know when they can step into the kitchen and hit the ball. Thanks

10:00 for the draping net rule, what would happen if the ball is popped up, bounces just on the other side of the net, and, due to spin and/or wind, the ball goes back over the net, and then, before the ball bounces on the other side, the player due to hit the ball reaches over the net and hits the ball into the net?
I saw Ben Johns do this in a tournament about a year ago. In that case, there was no bar below the net, so there was no reason the point would be replayed. With this rule change, intentionally hitting the ball into the net in this [very rare] scenario could mean the point would be replayed. Thoughts?

I'm playing in a 2.5-2-9 league with a lot of ex-tennis players who seem to still take a step when taking a volley out of the air, & go in the kitchen a lot. I've been playing awhile & indiscreetly tell them to "watch it" when they do it. After a couple weeks, I called my partner on it. (This is a good, blatant step into the kitchen). She asked me what kind of work I do that I can notice so many details 😂.

I thought calling the ball out after it hits the floor is a line call and stops play, however calling "out" before the ball hits the floor is considered player communication. if the ball happens to land in, play can continue. Is this correct?

Also a rule of etiquette, if my opponents get angry over my or my partner's line call they are very unlikely to get a re-serve or a change in call.

The rules state very clearly you can call a ball out while it is in the air but that is considered team mate talk. If it bounces close to a line, it must be called out again immediately after it bounces. If the teqammates disagree if it was in our out, the call goes to the opponents.
