Hello everyone and welcome to another video on the Introduction and History of computer graphics with visual representation.
First of all, what is computer graphics?
Computer Graphics is the art of drawing pictures using computers. It involves computations, creation, and a manipulation is a rendering tool for the generation and manipulation of images. In today's life, Computer graphics has now become a common element in user interfaces, T.V Commercial motion pictures. In computer graphics, two or three- dimensional pictures can be created that are used for research. Many hardware devices algorithm has been developing for improving the speed of pictures generation with the passes of time.
Let's talk about computer graphics history. We will start from the 1950s :
1) 1950:The First Graphics Images are created by Ben Laposky using an Oscilloscope.
2) 1951: Jay Forrester and Robert Everett of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) produce the Whirlwind a Mainframe Computer.
3) 1955: The SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Equipment) air defense system is designed by Bert Sutherland.
4) 1959: General Motors and IBM develop “DAC-1” (Design Augmented by Computers), the first industrial CAD system (Computer-Aided Design).
5) 1961: Spacewar, the first video game, is developed by MIT student Steve Russell for the DEC PDP-1 minicomputer.
6) 1963: Ivan Sutherland develops Sketchpad,
7) 1963: Larry Roberts develops the first effective hidden-line removal algorithm.
8) 1963: The mouse is invented by Doug Englebart at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI).
9) 1965: The digital line drawing algorithm for raster devices developed in 1962 by Jack Bresenham.
10) 1966: Ivan Sutherland creates the first head-mounted display.
11) 1967: MIT’s Center for Advanced Visual Studies is founded by Gyorgy Kepes.
12) 1967: Don Greenberg starts a program at Cornell.
13) 1969: At the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) of Xerox, Utah alumni Alan Kay develops the concept of Graphical User Interface (GUI).
14) 1973: The film Westworld makes the first use of 2D animation.
15) 1974: Alexander (Alex) Schure found the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT).
16) 1974: Edwin (Ed) Catmull develops both the Z-buffer hidden-surface algorithm as well as texture mapping.
17) 1975: At IBM, mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot introduces geometry of fractional dimension.
18) 1975: William (Bill) Gates and Paul Allen found Microsoft.
19) 1975: Utah student Martin Newell creates a 3D computer model of a physical teapot.
20) 1976: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak found Apple.
21) 1976: Utah student Edwin (Ed) Catmull found Pixar.
22) Videogame arcades was born with the first arcade games using real-time 2D sprite graphics. Some of the more famous arcade games include Pong, Space Invaders, and Speed Race.
23) 1982: Utah alumni John Warnock founds Adobe Systems.
24) After a visit of Xerox’s PARC in 1979, introducing the Macintosh in
1984 which will spark the graphical user interface revolution.
25) 1980: Turner Whitted at Bell Labs (now at Microsoft Research) introduces a general ray-tracing paradigm.
26) 1980: The European Association for Computer Graphics is formed and the first EUROGRAPHICS conference held in Geneva.
27) 1980: The MIT Media Lab is founded by Nicholas Negroponte.
28) 1980: The computer animation production studio Pacific Data Images (PDI) is founded by Carl Rosendahl.
29) 1981: IEEE Computer Society starts publishing a new journal, Computer Graphics, and Applications.
30) 1982: Utah alumni James (Jim) Clark founds Silicon Graphics Inc.(SGI).
31) 1982: Autodesk is founded and AutoCAD released.
32) 1982: Disney releases Tron, the first film with 15 minutes of fully computer-generated 3D shots.
33) Important advances in chroma keying.
34) Millions-selling systems from Atari, Nintendo, and Sega.
35) MS-DOS-based personal computers, Apple IIs and Macs and Amigas, Which also allowed users to program their games if skilled enough.
36) 1992: Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) releases the Open Graphics Library (OpenGL).
37) 1993: Nvidia is founded.
38) 1995: Pixar Animation Studios produce Toy Story, the first computer-animated full-length feature film.
39) 1999 Saw Nvidia release the seminal GeForce 256.
40) 2001: Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within is the first feature-length digital film that includes a cast of photorealistic digital actors.
Now let's talk about the current situation of computer graphics. A new concept has been emerged with the name of virtual reality and augmented reality where we try to see the object by using the virtual environment. A lot of research is going on in this field. For example, Facebook is doing a lot of development and research in the field of virtual reality and augmented reality.
