"Put simply, R.E.M. wrote ‘Everybody Hurts’ to save people’s lives. Everything about the song was designed to stop teenagers from committing suicide; from the straightforward lyrics to the dramatic string arrangements to the beautiful melody, the song hits directly where it counts — the heart." Drew Wardle

This song saved my life once. I was suicidal and I listened to this lots and it really helped. I'm still here.

"Deep" doesn't begin to describe how important this song is. This video has literally been credited for saving people's lives. That's why it literally has millions of views.

REM have been quoted as saying that this song no longer belongs to the band, it belongs to anyone who has ever listened to it and gotten some comfort from it

The part of this song that always gets me is at 6:45 with the old man who just lost his wife. Totally crushing.

I once attempted suicide and was in a coma, what I didn't think about was my two boys I was leaving behind with their Bastard father. What I'm trying to say is stop and really think about what you are doing and who you are affecting by your actions. Thank God I survived and got to see my boys grow up!

Guys - if you like this song, try : Losing My Religion, It's The End of the World as we Know it, Man on the Moon or Shiny Happy People. You will recognize some of these from popular movies ! Great music by REM !

As somebody who has been there, I can tell you that when you are in that place that is so dark, so crushing, the only way you see to get out, is simply to not exist anymore... you *won't* call a crisis line, you *can't*, because you don't see yourself as something worth saving. If you don't get lucky, like I did, and have somebody from outside of your situation intervene directly, you probably won't survive. I nearly didn't. Check in on your friends. Especially the ones you have always seen as strong. I was always the rock, the one who was there for everybody else when they needed somebody. I think knowing that I could break really scared a lot of my friends. I lost quite a few in the years since. The road to recovery is a long, arduous one. It's never one that has to be travelled alone, share your load with those who offer to help, and be willing to help shoulder the load of another. Together, the load becomes lighter.

And look for the ones who have isolated themselves from any group, they're usually the ones who see themselves as outcasts, or not belonging. A compliment, or a brief conversation about the weather, could be the bright spot in their week. Never underestimate the power of your words, or of a single, random, act of kindness.

This song helped me SO much when I was extremely ill in the early 90’s. Even now, I turn to it when struggling.

*Love you guys* .!!! *Here is the backstory on this* Michael Stipe { Lead Singer } wrote this for his friend *Kurt Cobain of Nirvana* Trying to "reach him, so to speak" and pull him out of his depression... Sadly, as we all know, Kurt took his own life, although there is endless speculation as to whether or not it was actually suicide, but that's for another THAT'S why this song hits ME so hard and I thought you should know... David ...

It's ironic. In a song with minimal percussion, the beautiful melody was written by their drummer Bill Berry. I'm sure this song has saved many lives. The power of music.♥

I always forget how hard this song hits until it starts and he says "when you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on. Don't let yourself go.." and I just break down. It's a place I live in most of the time, so hearing people sing about it is extra emotional for me.

There have been times when I was younger, closeted, and unmedicated that what kept me going was just knowing that I was not alone, that other people had felt like I did and I was not beyond being understood. This song definitely reaches out to give people that connection.

For faster, fun R.E.M. song: “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”

R.E.M was THE College Station staple of the 80's, and then had a huge crossover hit in '91 with Losing My Religion and had many mainstream hit singles. You can't go wrong - so much to check out! It's the End of the World (As We Know It), The One I Love, Losing My Religion, Orange Crush, Fall on Me, and the aforementioned Losing My Religion. (to start) Thanks for the react!
