The Brazilian inventor Alberto Santos Dumont created the first aircraft in the world capable of performing a complete flight, including takeoff, landing and stay in the air without the need for a ramp to launch.
Named 14 Bis, the plane was also known in French as 'Oiseau de Proie', which means 'Bird of Prey'. The demonstration of Santos Dumont, considered 'aviation Father', took place on November 12, 1906 in Paris, France.

The feat was accompanied by a multitude of witnesses, including the European press, and had its authenticity certified by the Aero Club of France and the International Aeronautical Federation (FAI), which recognized the flight as the first in history.
On the same flight, which reached 220 meters, 21 seconds at an average speed of 37.4 km / h, the FAI also approved the first distance record of a heavier-than-air and in another demonstration, the first record speed, marks with a 41.3 km / h.

A few days earlier, in a first attempt not officially registered, held on October 23, 1906, the aviator Santos Dumond flew about 60 meters with the 14 Bis. On this flight, the Brazilian reached a height of two to three meters.
The inventor also designed, built and flew the first airships with a petrol engine, merit also recognized internationally. On October 19, 1901, he won the Deutsch Prize, to fly his dirigible number 6, a flight 30 minutes rounding the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Worth 100, 000 francs (currency of the time), the award was created by the oil millionaire Henri Deutsch de la Meurthe and would for the first person who could do such a path with a motorized flying machine. With the completion, Brazil has become one of the most famous people in the world during the twentieth century.
Life's history
Santos Dumont was born on July 20, 1873 in the city of Palmira - MG. Since childhood technology fascinated him. As a boy, he began to build kites and small airplanes powered by a propeller driven by twisted rubber springs.
Residing in France since 17 years, he studied Science and traveled to several countries in Europe. A true aviation genius, he devoted his life to create flying machines, designing, building and piloting various airships, airplanes and ultralights.

In 1900, the inventor had already created nine balloons, with two that became famous: the Brazil, inflated hydrogen and released on July 4, 1898 and Amérique, which in June 13, 1899 was fourth in a tournament air, for the balloonist that landed farther from the starting point.
Simultaneously with ballooning, Santos Dumont began experimenting with airships. The first was designed N1, 25 meters long and 180 cubic capacity, which was inflated on 18 September 1898. The experiment ended torn before the flight due to a botched maneuver by helpers.

Winner of several aviation awards, the money he received the Brazilian generally distributed among its workers and poor people of Paris. Santos Dumont had no children and no wife or girlfriends records.
Invention caused death
In 1908 Santos Dumont was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was no longer able to drive or fly. Still, on September 28, 1909 held its last flight. The disease led to a deep depression and a sense, the invention of the airplane led to his death.
With the onset of World War I, the Brazilian witnessed the use of airplanes in the conflict. Embittered by the invention be used for evil purposes. In 1928 he returned to Brazil and on July 23, 1932, in Guaruja - SP he committed suicide at the age of 59.

The story reports that suicide was possibly because Santos Dumont saw the planes of Getulio Vargas, the way of an attack against the Constitutionalist Revolution in the Field of Mars, as the basis of the pilots were part of the movement to overthrow the president.
Top honors
The 'aviation Father' received honors in several countries. In Brazil, in 1932, the state decree number 10, 447 changed the name of his hometown, Palmira, to Santos Dumont. In 1936, the first airport of Rio de Janeiro was baptized as Santos Dumont.
The aviator was also honored in the country by the Brazilian Mail, which in 1956 launched a series of commemorative stamps to the fiftieth anniversary of the first flight of heavier-than-air. In the same year, the aviator's house in the country was transformed into the Museo Casa Natal de Santos Dumont.
Wright brothers
After the presentation of the first aircraft in the world without the need for a ramp to launch, built by Santos Dumont, the Wright brothers appeared, claiming the record. However, the US machine previously created could not take off by itself.

Wristwatch
Santos Dumont also popularized wristwatches. Friend's famous watchmaker Louis Cartier, the inventor spoke of the difficulties in timing the flights and was presented with a watch with leather strap, to mark the time of its air records.
On Google
In 2012, on the day Santos Dumont would complete 139 years old, Google pays tribute to the inventor with a doodle (special logo). The image highlights the 'aviation Father' with a background showing a plane between the letters that make up the site name.
