WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY AND THE BEGINNING OF THE UNITED NATIONS DECADE ON ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION
This year, World Environment Day was chosen by the United Nations to launch the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.
The Decade urges us to protect and rewild ecosystems on a global scale. That means working actively to restore their health and recuperate ecological relationships and interactions, natural beauty, and spiritual depth. That is the work we have been carrying out at Rewilding Argentina for the past 20 years.
A scientific consensus agrees that restoring natural, healthy, complete, and functional ecosystems is the only way we have to halt biodiversity loss, prevent new pandemics, reverse the climate crisis, and ensure our species survival on Earth. Ten years is the timeline experts have identified as the last chance to prevent catastrophic climate change.
Restore, repair, recover are verbs that must become concrete, measurable actions taken in every corner of the world. Now is the time to work to reverse the damage we've caused, reintroducing extinct species and recovering the threatened ones, reestablishing ecological interactions, and revitalizing local communities. Now is the time for Rewilding.
