The Last of Us Part II - HDR analysis and video setting guide

Adam @evilboris Fairclough takes a look at The Last of Us part II's HDR output on PS4 and gives some recommendations on how to best setup the game.

I've been playing on a 65" CX and the whole scene where you enter the theatre in the rain is hyper real looking. An incredible moment. The water shaders for materials and falling water are truly incredible. Moments that made me think that real time rendering has surpassed Pixar/Blur movies in certain ways. Playing on a calibrated 77" A9G, and it's one of the best looking games I have ever seen in terms of natural and realism. Even the sound design is top notch. The film grain is perfect too; subtle touch and not overdone.

I am currently playing this on a PS4 Pro and an LG C9 oled and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

I played this over the last weekend with my friend. We finished it and we loved it (Well, artistically loved, some parts ofc tore our hearts out). We played on the default settings on the E9 65 version. Tbh the story and gameplay is so gripping it's not like you'd be thrown off because of a scene being a tad too bright tbh. How far along have you come in the game itself? Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

I am not a fan of the grainy film effect being the centerpiece of the entire game. If you want to have it in cutscenes that is fine, but for gameplay i would rather have a cleaner look.

Great stuff, Adam. Been playing on a C9 (calibrated by Vince!) and it’s not only an incredible technical achievement but the HDR is sooo good. So carefully and artistically implemented. A real treat and a spectacular advertisement for just how good HDR can be.

Been playing on a Sony 65X930E. That scene that you showed in the town and said the game was over brightening HDR making dusk look like day is inaccurate. That's early morning, not early evening. They're setting out on their patrol for the day. Hence, the next time we see them it's mid day. The game isn't over brightening at all. At least, not from what I've seen. It looks great to my eye.

I have a LG C9 too, can you tell me if you use HGiG or DTM ON for this game, and also is your color temperature set to medium or warm 1?

the film grain is terrible with hdr, they need to dial it back a bit.

Playing this on my PS4 Pro and using my LINSAR HDR tv, it looks amazing, also turned the film grain down to six, it made it look much better.
