Their restricted diet of non-nutritious eucalyptus leaves could be the cause, as this diet could not support a larger brain.
To demonstrate how clueless they are, when given a branch with leaves and a pile of leaves on a plate, a koala will eat the leaves on the branch because they cannot recognise the leaves on the plate as food.

Koalas don’t eat the leaves because they think the leafs are fallen leaves which are less nutritious so they can actually recognise the leaves as food but they don’t eat it to get more nutrients out of the energy spent on digestion.
