How To Prevent Kidney Stones?

Some of the common risk factors, for kidney stones, include: dehydration, a high salt diet; surprisingly, not enough calcium in your diet could cause kidney stones. One of the most common misconceptions is that because most kidney stones are calcium that dietary calcium supplements are a risk factor for kidney stones. And, that's actually contrary to the evidence. Prevention of kidney stones follows two guidelines. One is to dilute the urine with as much fluid as possible, and the other is to remove the constituents that form the kidney stones. One of the biggest risk factors for elevated urine calcium levels is not, in fact, dietary calcium, but is dietary sodium. Often patients will Google kidney stone diets, and it's very dogmatic about avoiding oxalates. However, one of the strategies that may be easier to follow would be to increase your dietary calcium.

Great video, very informative! I just wonder if the dietary recommendations are sometimes too strict for the average person. It seems like balancing everything can be overwhelming, especially when social eating comes into play. What do you all think?

I once had a lot of pain in my back and I thought it was the muscles but I realized it must be my kidneys! I was in terrible pain so I started chugging milk and water and it went away within an hour

I had recurrent oxalate stones, had multiple trips to the emergency room and lithotripsy. Tried everything to prevent the stones but nothing worked. My urine would form multiple visible stones at room temperature if left in a jar overnight. I began taking Garcinia Cambogia 6000 mg twice a day a year ago. I have not had any stone since then, and my urine no longer forms stones at room temperature.

What a great video, very informative and well-presented! I do wonder though, while the tips on hydration are super helpful, isn’t it a bit simplistic to suggest that water alone can prevent all types of kidney stones? I feel like diet plays such a huge role that maybe more discussion on specific foods would have been valuable too. Just my two cents!

great video! really appreciated the insights from Yale Medicine. however, i can't help but wonder if the emphasis on dietary changes is enough. i’ve read some studies suggesting that genetics play a bigger role than we think. what do you all think about that?

Ok that wasn’t what I expected and I want to know why. I get massive calcium kidney stones and end up peeing blood for a few weeks after. Unfortunately water isn’t key here and I really need to know why increasing calcium helps cause I have another one and I don’t want to do something that could make it worse. Maybe I need to see the endocrinologist for my parathyroid cause this is killing me.

So just drink lots of milk and water and avoid mcdonald's fries. Ive already been doing that and I guess thats why im at the age of 31 with no stones yet. Wanted to look it up tho to make sure im doing something right or wrong and change if needed because kidney stones sound horrific

Does drinking alot of water prevent
1. Tartar on teeth
2. Plaque in artery
3. Plaque in joints
4. Tonsil stones
5. Galstone?

I bet all of these are made of the same elements.
