I think it is good to remember that even LEGO Minecraft struggled to really find its identity. They released a bunch of display sets that ultimately were just shelf warmers until the minifigure sets came out. Both Mario and Sonic have a good shot at being great evergreen themes. They just need to get past that hurdle.

I feel as Lego sonic continues it will start to have more specific sets. Like how Lego Mario has been starting to make more specific sets with stuff like the luigis mansion sets.

I think it's very cool that the new shadow set has radical highway in the background instead of green hill

We have to remember, that for sonic is that sonic is only 1 wave in and they didn’t want to out all their eggs in one basket plus with the new leaked sets it’s clear they’re branching out with a lab with shadow and a knuckles Mach and rouge glider set, it’s clear lego sonic will probably be doing more modern sets

Curious how the rumored animal crossing theme will slot into this if it does end up being true

I would think if they want to keep Lego Mario the same, they should incorporate more underutilized characters and ideas, rather than just using just some basic assets or places that could use representation over just Peach’s castle, Bowser’s castle, basic plains area with toad houses sometimes, and basic world locations from new super series, imagine a battle arenas based on the 3D world bosses based around them with gimmicks similar to the battle, or even give us more themes that reference the bigger parts of the franchise, like maybe Mario Party and Sunshine locations with more under utilized characters from them like FLUDD or maybe even give us all of the cast from the spin off games (praying on Lego Waluigi)

Although I am in Love with some of the Sonic sets I'd rather have a set based off of the Metal Overlord from Sonic Heroes or Perfect Chaos from Sonic adventure

I see your point about Sonic, but there is a reason. 1. This is intended for kids and a lot of the classic stuff is being made very prominent now and is extremely recognisable to children, especially with the movies showing the Death Egg Robot and Tails' plane (which is actually Sonic's in the game) and Green Hill. I think it's fine for now, as LEGO Sonic only properly got started last year, but I think going forward, it would be really cool to have much bigger sets like Super Sonic vs Perfect Chaos with some broken bits of road, Perfect Chaos, half complete buildings, and it could have minifigures of all the characters who were present: Super Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Tikal and Big.
Other ideas I have include:
The Egg Carrier
Space Colony ARK with the Gun Agents, Gerald Robotnik and Maria
Shadow vs the Biolizard
Metal Overlord from Heroes
The Chaotix in Frog Forest complete with huge mushrooms and a giant frog
The truck chase from City Escape
The outside area of Twinkle Park. It could have Amy and Zero, Big fishing at the pool, Sonic in the rollercoaster and the castle structures.
Perhaps the Titans from Frontiers, Giganto, Wyvern and Knight, there could be a Sage minifigure with one of them, too.
Or maybe something from Lost World, I could see a Zavok big-fig working.
Something from '06 that could have Silver and Blaze
Perhaps the Solaris fight with the 3 Super Hedgehogs.

I just thought of these off the top of my head. Raise your hand if you think these would be dope as LEGO sets

Well Lego Sonic wave 2 is more specific, even if they aren't one to one from the games they are still inspired by the games and scenes they're from.

I feel like most the Lego video game themes, are more like sets of parts for building mocs of the iconic stuff as for in recent years Lego has been pushing more for the consumer to try and make there own Mocs, however if that’s the case perhaps they should bring back the alternate builds that used to be showcased on the back of the box or in the instructions

The one set I want more than anything for Sonic the Hedgehog will NEVER happen.... I really want a Big the Cat (Big fig obviously) with finish pool set. No one else is going to want that, its not "fun" enough lol

You make a great point. I think they're starting by playing it safe with Green Hill references all over. The sets feel like they exist to sell the minifigures and nothing else. That said, I completely get your argument now. I was going to buy one but opted for the Lego Spider-Man NWH set instead to combine with my Daily Bugle. I'll probably get a Sonic set if they do SA2, Heroes, or Unleashed moments. Thanks for the reality check

Fair and interesting point. It's a problem I too have with them. Though it might be a good marketing strategy, at least for the start. I mean, it's not like Sega doesn't put green hill zone in every game, because it is so iconic and recognizable.

Sonic fighting eggmans robot from sonic 2 is specific.

I feel like Lego is just flexing on us when it comes to Sonic. Like, I'm eyond happy that we're finally getting Lego Sonic sets, but I'd rather hear about more new content that SEGA is releasing for Sonic then just having to sit down and hear "Lego Sonic!" this and "Lego Sonic!" that each time there's a direct or something, like we get it, the Lego Sonic theme is cool, you don't have to keep bringing it up a thousand times and showoff about it

not sure I entirely agree here. A lot of these set piece aren’t really translatable. I know I’m passing off your specific examples as if they are the only choices lego has but I don’t see how a Lego set, with all its restrictions and stylistic requirements could replicate the frontiers fight with gargantos. And even more so, we never get Lego battle arenas outside of Ninjago gimmicks for a reason, Mario’s moon cave is a bland boring arena once translated into Lego. The only way it works is if you include platforming and action elements from the moon cave sequence or a build like the church to be a location for the event. Otherwise, an empty field with mario bowser and some hats, that’s not a build, or a Lego set….

I think since it is the first year Sonic is getting sets as an official theme, ofc it is going to rely on Green Hill zone, b/c it's safe. Bro Lego Minecraft has made overworld grass sets since it's inception and it's lasted 10+ years. I think there will be variations away from Green Hill Zone as the theme goes on, but every theme is guilty of falling back on recognizable locations or vehicles. I mean how many Batman and Joker Batmobile sets have we gotten by now. Ok now how many of those were in the last 5 years. I'd be surprised if we didn't get Chemical Plant Zone at some point. Mushroom Hill Zone is also a possibility with how prominant it has been in the movies. Mario has been slowly branching out. I hope at some point we get a 18+ Sonic set. I think it's best we just wait and see.

Lego is doing despicable me sets, and not mario movie sets... Also they've partnered with paramount already so like why not do movie sets? Imagine sonic vs eggman san fransico chase or sonic and tom truck vs egg man tank. Maybe like sonic vs knuckles battle for the emerald or sonic and tails snowy mountain chase. Idk it just could be a lil better though i am just happy they have lego themes in general

holy shit you just brought up a good point. Imagine if almost every Marvel set was just "Iron Man vs Hulk no specific fight just... tony vs bruce", or "Spider-Man vs Doc Ock". Instead we get the SPECIFIC fights from Age of Ultron and Spider-Man 2, so like... why can't Mario or Sonic do this?
