I agree. Gonna add a small caveat, a sorta rehabilitated 3 strike rule: if someone goes to prison for a crime that's directly related to a basic function of a job 3x, than they can never work in that type of position or field again but with some wiggle room because no person or situation is the same. So like money launderers couldn't be accountants for a business that isn't theirs and if it is their business then their business should undergo more scrutiny.

At the same time supposed white collar crimes should be tried based on the cascade of harm done. Stealing and selling art for the profit of terrorists. Or CEO's or entire corporate boards that make a deal that is guaranteed to hurt the workers (regardless of the country or countries they work in), the customers/clients, or the environment. How they aren't charged with genocide or crimes against humanity boggles my mind.

I'm also a big believer in ending poverty. Because if the motive to commit a crime isn't based on poverty, then there's something up with that person, either situationally, physically, or mentally, that would be easier to pinpoint and address, and addressing those issues won't always require any type of imprisonment at all. Getting the proper treatment for an illness, getting them out of an abusive situation, etc. Violent crimes, might require some separation from society, but very few people are irredeemable. But even then they're people and should be treated as such.

I have a dream of making single-person housing that's small but affordable. I see places like new York have these mini apartments that are still expensive but if you take that idea to the burbs or smaller cities then there is an opportunity for inexpensive housing that provides a springboard for young people to leave their parents or people to leave an abusive controlling relationship or people saving for owning a home or people transitioning from prison to society or foster kids old enough to get emancipated and have a cheap place to live.
It's just so hard when all the apartments are the same. I remember leaving home at 18 and the severe anxiety and stress of paying $700 a month for rent making minimum wage.
I think people in America think we have it so good here but my friend grew up poor in the Phillipines and she said Americans kill themselves working just to meet minimum requirements of life

Do you think people would cope better with the transition from prison to the outside better if they were given similar housing set ups? Similar in terms of having a shared living arrangement so they had a sense of community but their own freedom.

Like I told a guy once, there are three types of people in this world. Good law abiding citizens, those in prison, and those who should be in prison. The third group are usually the most critical of those in
