All you need is a single 12v supply for the gate drivers and feedback oscillator. The circuit I used is set to operate from around the 500khz range so it would be good for coils a lot smaller than the one I'm testing. It also worked pretty good from my larger coil minus the topload which was at around 400khz. Aside from trying to get ramped arcs etc this might be the easiest setup I can think of that also seems fairly reliable.
Just by ear it seems like the right tuning allows for very nice switching where I see the best output, and the least amount of kickback into the line which I can hear via my computer speakers on the same breaker. As for which PLL tuning is best for ramped discharges I'm not sure yet but I think there's a trick to all the tuning I plan to spend more time trying to figure out.
