Everyone said we HAD to go to Zwolle, The Netherlands

We have been told over and over - "You really need to visit Zwolle.”

So, we finally did!

We had a really nice trip from Amsterdam to visit the capital city of the province Overijssel. There are museums, markets, food, many dogs, and a gorgeous bookstore housed in a former church.

We hope you enjoy this Dutch city tour, even if the temperatures were below freezing most of the day! Zwolle is a charming city, that you should definitely add to your travel list in The Netherlands!

I live in Zwolle Netherlands. Excellent video about the city. Thumps up. Another suggestion . Visit the city of Deventer. Not far from Zwolle. It has a beautiful medieval centre with a lot of great buildings. A good mix of shops, restaurants en museums. You can find shops there you Will not find anywhere else. There is a shop that specialises in dachshunds. Sell everything for 1 particular dogspecies- als a brushshop. They sell old fashion cleaningbrushes. I subscribes to your site and look forward to your next video.

Haha the empy street is the most crowded one after 11pm ;)
Btw, nice to climb up the Sassenpoort. And yes, do come back in summer and sit at the canal watching boats. Although I do like the dark wintervibes and cosy cafes after 5 pm also

It's wierd to watch video's like this about my hometown lol. Good that Zwolle gets some promotion.
The reason for the star shape is because thats the old part of the city and it used to be a defensive line/fort.

Really full time enjoyed your entertaining Zwolle visit (where I'm living for 25 years now). You actually triggered me to visit that exhibition at De Fundatie, thanks ;-). Be well, Jeff

Ah, Brood the legend. Still have Saturday Night in my playlist. I was walking the streets in Amsterdam in the mid 90’s with a friend and Brood passed us with his baby girl on his arm. He was ‘stoned als een garnaal’. I lived and studied in Zwolle for 4 years. At this time my daughter does the same. She loves the city as much as I do.

You definitely have to do another video, there is so much more to see.

fun fact about the Grote Kerk. It had the tallest churchtower before it was struck by lightning and burnt down 3 times

I am a Zwollenaar. All my family is from here. centeies back. I am not living there anymore, but I visit family a lot, so nice. It is a Hanze city, so it was a member f the Hanze leage. A trade cit, y like Kampen, Zutphen, Trade was with Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Baltic states. Long before Amsterdam became a trade city. Loved to see you there.

You mentioned something about the ring shape of the city center. Those 'points' that stick out are because of defensive reasons, where it was possible to reorient cannons from one point into the direction of another point to provide cover. The most amazing place in NL where this is more visible than anywhere else is Vesting Bourtange
This bastion never ever fell to enemy soldiers, partly also because of the natural defensive line of a huge deadly swamp. It's tiny, so make sure to combine it with something else if you'd visit it, or go in summer when they go re-inactment events.

There are parts of the walls at the other side of the old centre, but no gates, there is the mustered tower too.

I agree: Deventer and Zutphen are cool cities too. I live in Arnhem: the Eusebiuskerk with an elevator to the top. No more stairs. 😂 The Openluchtmuseum is huge, visit on a sunny day in spring time. 😊 🌼🌷🌸

As someone from Zwolle, it is very refreshing to see 'my' town through other peoples' eyes! To be honest, I did not know a lot of the historical facts, so glad to have learned something! Glad you two had fun :)

If you come back, do visit Zwolle again some time in the summer! There's a lot of nature/recreational parks/etc in the area near the river (IJssel) and on the eastern side of the town that are well worth exploring. Probably best to save that for when the temperatures are back above 15C though
