Creating a Sensory-Friendly Feeding Environment:
How do we create a sensory-friendly feeding environment to help our children feel regulated and engaged during mealtimes with the family?
Here’s what you can do:
1. Complete a Sensory Profile:
• Identify if the child is sensory seeking, sensory avoiding, or a mix of both.
• Understand what types of sensory input help regulate their system.
2. Provide Proprioceptive Support:
• For tactile-sensitive children, ensure they have good support under their feet at the table.
• Use a foot fidget or resistive band they can kick against to engage their core and feel more grounded.
3. Adjust Lighting:
• For light-sensitive children, consider using dim lighting or candlelight during meals.
• Install a dimmer switch in the dining room to control the light intensity.
Creating a supportive environment tailored to your child’s sensory needs can make mealtimes more enjoyable and successful for everyone!
