Pearson A level Maths, Pure Year 2 Textbook (6.2)

In this video I cover the graphs of reciprocal trigonometric functions (secant, cosecant and cotangent) and it’s properties (periodicity, asymptotes and transformation). I then cover its application.

The way i like to remember these graphs is by looking at their relationships with the original graphs. e.g: cosx and secx

all the points where cosx intersects the x-axis are the asymptotes of secx. The turning points are the same for both graphs. The difference is that for cosx, the closer you get to the TP, the larger the y-values get and for secx, the closer to the TP, the y-values get smaller. This is the same for cosec, & ofc cosec is just a translation by pi/2 to the right (same as sin).

For cot, it’s the same thing - the points where y=0 become asymptotes, whereas the original asymptote points of tanx are where cotx intersects the x-axis, & the graph flips.

i think they become asymptotes because since they’re reciprocal graphs, you can’t do y= 1/0 so it’s undefined. 🤔
