This song should be rereleased. It's as relevant today as it was then

Even as a man this song gives me goosebumps, as it should to any man who’s mother gave life to. What an inspiring song for us all to break down the draconian mindsets that hold us back as a society. Can’t wait to see the movie.

This got a lot of radio play when I was a kid. It was a great anthem for women's rights.

The absolute confidence Reddy displays in her facial expressions is just priceless.

I didn’t know she died. This song was important to the feminist movement when it was released. We love our Aussie Helen in the land down under.

The theme for the women’s movement! She wrote the song and was an activist. RIP great lady.

I forgot to mention there was a movie made about her and her iconic song called “I am Woman” which she got to see before she passed away. She loved it. They said she sang throughout the movie and cried. Her granddaughter is in the movie singing the song Revolution in the background in a scene where she’s at a nightclub with her friend and they play the song at the closing credits. It’s on Netflix now.

Helen Reddy was one of the most successful female singers of the 1970s. "I Am Woman" was her most popular and famous song. It went to #1 on the pop charts in the early 1970s. This song was used as the anthem song for the feminist movement's fight for women's equality. It's one of the most iconic activist songs of all-time. Other Helen Reddy songs I would recommend you try are "Delta Dawn", "Angie Baby", and "You And Me Against The World".

This was done in the '70s when the woman's movement when women were fighting for equal pay for equal work. This was a godsend to those of us who were fighting for that then. It was very typical back then for people to tell women when they asked why men were making less than their male colleagues for the same work that "he has a family to support". They would even tell this to single mothers who were not getting child support. The divorce rate was going up at the time and single mothers were becoming the poorest members of our society. Helen wrote this song after finding out her band was making more money than she was. You should see the trailer for the Biopic on her. This song is what thousands of us sang as we march down streets fight for equal rights.

One of Australia's greatest singers! She said she wrote this because she was mad at always getting discriminated against and pushed aside to the men. She stated as she was lying in bed thinking about this that phrase "I am woman hear me roar" came into her head over and over! Try her version of Delta Dawn from the midnight special. Most people think of Tanya Tucker singing it but she did it first. I also just learned there is a great new bio movie about her and how she left Australia to go to N.Y. as a single mother with a 3 year old daughter with $200 in her pocket to be a singer! Brave! It's the same name as the song here I am woman

That song was the anthem for a generation of women ready to break free. Ready to take their place at the head of the line. 💪🏼

Helen was a great Australian talent who gained attention in the USA around the same time as Olivia Newton John. They really showcased the talent coming out of Australia at the time. The song was also written around the time of the birth of the womens liberation movement

Thank you for the lovely tribute to the Queen of 70s Pop! I personally think her best vocal performance is on You're My World, her last Top 20 pop hit!

When this song was released in the US in the early 70's, single, divorced or widowed women were not allowed to sign a credit application by themselves...you had to get a man to consign. And a women's salary for loan assessment purposes was reduced by 50%!
This was the start of a lot of equal pay discussions. Single mothers were the poorest demographic in the country. It was a time of great change for women everywhere!
